Nottinghamshire Outdoor Therapeutic Services (NOTS) has been developed to cater for an increased demand on our well established; long standing experience and provision in “Adventure/Outdoor Therapy”. The benefits of “Adventure/Outdoor Therapy” are widely documented the concept growing rapidly throughout the world.
Although traditionally we have worked with clients who experience enduring mental health issues as well as providing support to carers, we are happy to work with any individual, group or provider including ex-military personnel who wish to experience the benefits of the “Great Outdoors”! We also welcome the support of volunteers who maybe using the outdoor environment as part of their recovery.
With recent changes in legislation and the implementation of “personal budgets” or not; for some service users, a cost effective option which combines the benefits of exercise with social interaction is a real consideration for some individuals including self-funders & those on direct payments.
Adventure/Outdoor Therapy” cannot be seen in isolation or viewed as a one stop fix, it is recommended alongside other treatments and therapies as advised by professionals. Our experience has shown time and time again that a rolling program of events creates a self-supporting group of individuals who rely on future activity to provide them with not only enthusiasm and interest but personal motivation.
“A vigorous five-mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world”.
– Paul Dudley White
There is no pressure on anyone to participate in an activity they do not feel comfortable with or at a level that is beyond them. The importance is social interaction underpinned with physical exercise. The long term view is for participants to form social groups of their own, link with other outdoor and environmental organisations and undertake activity without the help and support of NOTS. However, we are always to hand if help is required.
