More About Me

My background, philosophy & experience

A love for boats and wild places I have always had a passion for exploring the outdoors and particularly sailing and kayaking. My early passion was for sailing multihulls but I also loved walking in Snowdonia as a child. As I grew up I knew I wanted to work outdoors and to pass on my enthusiasm for our natural world.

Early qualifications and specialist knowledge In 1983 I became the youngest British Canoe Union Level 5 Coach, Sea. The following year, I was the youngest to achieve the Mountaineering Instructors Certificate, both still the highest qualifications available in the UK. In 1987, I wrote “A Practical Guide to Sea Kayaking” considered one of the best guides to the sport and still in demand to this day. It is available to download here . With my range of skills and experience I have acted as a Technical Advisor to many organisations including universities and been an expert witness in Health and Safety cases on the water in the outdoor activity sector.

Development of the sport of sea kayaking I have been fortunate enough to have trained, mentored and assessed many of today’s prestigious/prolific BC Level 5 Sea Coaches. I have been involved in the creation and development of other countries’ sea kayak coaching and guiding programs, in particular Holland (NKB) and Canada (Paddle Canada). I was instrumental in the first Anglesey Sea Symposium and many of the other events around the UK which followed. I have had the pleasure to have been been involved in expeditions to many exotic locations in the world such as Arctic Norway, Maldives Islands, Alaska, the Galapagos Islands, Sri Lanka, Svalbard, Greenland and North America.

Nationally-recognised Outdoor Instructor In some form, I have worked for all the UK’s National Centres: Plas-y-Brenin (1980 to 1987), Glenmore Lodge, Plas Menai & Tollymore. I also continue to instruct/guide, and/or work alongside many other prestigious companies, in this country and abroad. Wilderness Scotland, Isle of Wight Sea Kayaking, Coastal Adventures (Canada), Skyak Adventures, World Challenge, British Schools Exploring Society, Anglesey Sea & Surf, Ice Warrior Hebridean Pursuits etc.

Boat-builder extraordinaire I built my first complete kayak in 1975 and since then have continued to design and build craft of various shapes and sizes, always tweaking and adapting the structures and fittings to improve performance and quality. In 1987 I set up Pure Perfection Custom, designing, developing and manufacturing sea kayaks, wave skis, surf and sailboards. I have since gone on to work for a number of manufacturers developing kayaks and equipment.
